What is Early Years?
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the framework for learning, development and care for children from birth to five years.
Established in September 2008, the heart of the EYFS is the principle that young children need to play in order to learn, grow and have fun. Its aim is to support schools and nurseries to ensure that children from all backgrounds have the same opportunities and life chances.
The EYFS is focused upon treating each child as an individual and thereby ensuring that they are learning through high quality play tailored for them. As a result each child develops at their own pace, having fun, making friends and learning as they play. Through this approach, children become more confident, secure and better prepared for the school – ready to reach their full potential.
During their time at Windmill, your child will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development.
Children should mostly develop the 3 prime areas first. These are:
Communication and language;
Personal, social and emotional development.
These prime areas are the most essential for your child’s healthy development and future learning. As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in 4 specific areas.
Understanding the world; and
Expressive arts and design.
These 7 areas are used to plan your child’s learning and activities. Professionals teaching and supporting your child will make sure that activities are suited to your child’s unique needs. The EYFS is designed to be really flexible so that staff can follow your child’s unique needs and interests.
Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking taking place both indoors and outside, All seven areas of learning are equally important and interconnected.
At Windmill Pre-School, the EYFS is the basis for the team and children. We pride ourselves on providing a fun, stimulating and varied play environment, from which children can grow. Welfare and safety for all our children is paramount, so you can be assured that, throughout their time with us, your child is safe and well cared for by experienced and trained staff.
We encourage parents to be involved as much as possible within the Pre-School setting, keeping you up to date with your child’s progress and securing a two-way trusting relationship with your child’s key worker. Through such a nurturing approach, your child, in our care, becomes a happy and confident individual.
